Kamquat & Mandarin Oranges Marmalade

Alo alo....Chinese New Year have been over for some time. Mamarazzi went hunting for Mandarin Oranges after CNY to make Marmalade for Ah Kong and Uncle Patrick thinking that it will be cheaper.

Weird...This year doesn't seems to be much Mandarin Oranges leftover. Unlike previous years there are tonnes of them.

Found some at The Store at RM3.80/kg and some at Jaya Grocer also around that price.

Well, beggar can't be chooser so bought some home and peeled the. Very juicy. In this tubs was about 12 to 15 Mandarin Oranges.

As usual, the  seeds and the white thingy was "tapau-ed" to be cook together with the marmalade.

Note : according to the experts, the seeds and the white thingy is full of natural pectin. Pectin is the thing that makes jam and marmalade become gel like.

Instead of using Mandarin oranges peel's, this year, she used Kamquat. Cut the Kamquat into halves and take out the seeds. Then slice it thinly to be boil together with mandarin oranges.

Add some sugar (to taste) and juice from half a lemon. Boil them till it become gel like.

This round she found that the taste is less bitter and more "kum" than when she add the mandarin orange peel last year.

But the funny thing is the yield for this year is just one large bottle and one medium bottle of Marmalade only. Last year at least can get a few bottles.

If you are worried that mandarin oranges and kamquat may not be mixed,  don't worry. Won't "lausai" (diarrhea). Ah Kong stayed here a few days and he finished 1/4 bottle of the marmalade liao. No lausai. Uncle Patrick and Auntie Florence had ate their also and said it's nice.

So feel free to go ahead and experiment as Mamarazzi spotted late shipment of Mandarin Oranges at Pasar Malam and fruit shop this week. Bought some. Not really cheap but....oh well...once a year....

    3. actually the cost of making it at home and buy is similar but the taste wise can adjust lor. Ah Kong diabetic so cant take a lot of sugar. Have to make it with less sugar. Store bought ones thought say sugar less but still very high content of it.

Yes. The seeds and white moe moe is a source of pectin. Pectin makes the jam pekat.

Lemon memang must add coz lemon juice makes the thing become pekat too.

Takut not good mixed because the kumquat is kum already...so not very suit if the "kum-ness"(new word by Mamarazzi) suits the marmalade or not. But found that it ngum ngum suit

  15. I like the home version jam, for sure we can control the amount of sugar to fit our taste. These days times are really tight because of my work so cooking has taken a back step. I hope to find the time to make this jam, I think both the kam and oranges will be loved by myself. Definetly less sugar will be best for my taste.
