Petai Jeruk (PIckled "Stinky Beans") Recipe

Selamat Hari Raya  Aidilfitri to all my Muslim readers. For those who "balik kampung", have a safe journey .

Ah Mah gave us a large plastic bag of Petai .

As Mamarazzi peeled the Petai, she was surprised to see there are some that were abnormally big. See! It's bigger than Mamarazzi's thumb.

Mamarazzi posted about it in her Facebook and surprisingly, one of her schoolmate suggested to make "Petai Jeruk".

Uiks!? What is Petai Jeruk? Mamarazzi never heard of that before. Asked her Classmate for Recipe hand here is what he said.

"Cut the papan petai into sizes that fits the pot... Normally into 3 pieces... If you wanna trim the hard side of the "papan" oso can.. Boil it until it turns darker... Drain it and picit(squeeze) the papan until the petai comes out... After this you can either soak with salted water semalaman(overnight) or just clean it up and store it inside a jar with salt water and asam keping (optional)... If you want to soak it semalaman, rinse thoroughly and store it as mentioned before... Best eaten after a day or two...."

Opps....Since Mamarazzi had already peeled the Petai, she just simply hentam and boiled the petai for about 10 minutes. Just tried with just a hand full as she was not sure if she would like the taste of Petai Jeruk.

Meantime, she put two piece of Sour Slices/ Sliced Tamarind/ Tamarind into a clean jar and a teaspoon of salt. Fill the jar with warm water to dissolve the salt.

Put the boiled Petai into the jar and waited 4 to 5 days before eating it.

After 5 days, the Petai turned yellowish green

Ate with rice. MMmm.....taste sourish and a bit salty. Very appetising according to her. She had rice with pickled Petai and Acar.

Bought this "Acar" from the night market. Suit her taste very much. The vegetables were crunchy and not too spicy. The lady added a lot of sesame seed and  crushed peanuts into the Acar.

The lady have a stall at SS2 night Market(Monday) near the hawker Centre, Chow Yang Pasar Malam(Thurdays) near the playground and Paramount Pasar Malam (Sunday)

She asked me to try one Petai. No way!

I don't like the Stinky Petai

Nope....not me. Don't want. You can have all of it.

  3. Never tried petai but heard it taste good! I think stinky food is something to go for! In the west, we eat blue cheese (mouldy cheese, stinky too but very good!) In the Philippines, my husband was once offered fermented tiny shrimps called bagoong..when the whiff came into his nostril he exclaimed: "pooh wee! It's already smelling so bad and you still want to eat it?!" Aiyo...he certainly lost his chance! So Little Kucing don't miss out ;)

  10. You bakar the petai also very nice tau. Just put the petai (papan - kulit and all) over a stove and let it char outside. Then peel.

    Yummy and pungent! ;)

  19. haha... Small Kucing, you look so cute holding your nose. Thanks for the recipe though I don't see myself doing this jeruk. Btw, this recipe works well for green mangoes too though no boiling needed. I also add sugar if I want a sweet mango jeruk. Trust you are enjoying your Sunday.
