Recently, some friends were talking about "Apam Balik".
If you are wondering what is Apam Balik, it's actually a kind of traditional cake in Malaysia which is usually taken during teatime or in the evening in over here. Similar to Pancake, it usually have thick skin with a layer of peanut butter, sugar sprinkled at the core and the corn on it. It's then folded in two and best eaten when it's still warm
Broadly speaking there are two types of Apam Balik, namely: -
Tradisional Apam Balik - pan sized and thick.
Crispy Apam Balik - it is crispy and have a thin skin like like crackers.
Crispy Apam Balik - it is crispy and have a thin skin like like crackers.
So far, she found two stalls that sells Apam Balik with shredded coconut filings. One is located at Seri Kembangan Village while the other is at SS2 Pasar Malam(night Market) on Mondays.
The SS2 Apam Balik stall is located next to the hawker centre opposite AmBank. If not mistaken they only have Apam Balik with shredded coconut filing every forth night. Mamarazzi remembered asking the lady boss that long time ago but not sure whether this has changed or not.
Mamarazzi love the thin crispy Apom Balik most whereas Papa likes the thick one. Unfortunately the thick ones does not have shredded coconut fillings.
Not cheap. RM1 a piece but worth every sens.
MMm....yummy coconut...
For me, I would eat both type of Apom Balik.
According to Papa, Indonesian Apom Balik is more innovative than ours. They have Chocolate apom balik, strawberry apom balik and any sort of apom balik that you can think of.
wah.. now this mamarazzi also joined in the apam balik heat huh?? hehehehehe.. i'm so looking forward to read the comments from the HHBC bloggers later~~ :D

DeleteOh ya...that one nice also. Used to be RM1.20 only but now naik harga liao
Lina
Ya lo....orang kaya go pasar malam also orang kaya area
actually depends on my mood.. sometimes i want to eat the thick one, sometimes i feel like eating the thick one.. both also taste quite different lah..
ReplyDeleteSK
DeleteMamarazzi likes the thin ones coz thick ones feels like eating flour and very filling
nowadays seldom can find those the put coconut already.. normally just peanut and a tiny little bit of sweet corn only..
ReplyDeleteNowadays, apom balik vendors so stingy. Sometimes see only 1 pcs of the sweet corn only in my apom balik. Ish... :(
DeleteSK
DeleteYa lor very seldom can find those with coconuts ones anymore. probably coconut tak tahan. very easy to be smelly
Lina
Sweet corn ada tak de pun never mind coz Mamaazzi not really keen on that
looks good lor that apam balik.. i think i can straight away hamtam three pieces at a time lah.. i mean the thin one.. thick one usually one piece is enough..
ReplyDeleteThick or thin, these both have lots of calories. Last time I didn't know and I used to buy it when I went pasar malam. That time I still studied in KL. Then, my male leng chai course mate commented, " Yan, I thought you are on diet, do you know these apom balik is very high in calories."
DeleteI tell you, i really mind people saying like that. So, I dare not eat Apom balik until today. When I crave for it, I will just eat one or two bites, then pass the remaining to my husband.
SK -Thin one of course can hentam 3 pcs la. If thick one see if you can or not LOL
DeleteYan-once in awhile should be ok gua
actually got another apom, no filling inside but the center is slightly thicker and then perimeters are paper thin one.. errrr, hehehehe, you know which one i'm talking about?? :p
ReplyDeleteYes, I know which one you are talking about. This is the lightest in calories one.
DeleteThe super thin one you can see in the 2nd photo bottom left hand corner. I like that one too but must eat hot. when cool down it;s not as crispy
