The Must Have For Chinese New Year - Jasmine Fragrant Rice.

Heavy ah....10kg of rice leh ! It's time to refill the rice container. We sure ate a lot during Chinese New Year

Have just filled up the container to the tippy top before Chinese New Year coz Mamarazzi said it’s auspicious to have the rice container fill to the brim as it signify a bountiful year ahead, and yet the rice finished so fast.

This weird Mamarazzi...why she cut the bag of rice at the bottom instead of the top. So weird.....

Yee Sang is a must have during the Chinese New Year

Apart from that, many would have fish, prawns , crabs and meat during Chinese New Year reunion dinner to symbolise abundance.

But Mamarazzi said during her granny's time, they don't get to eat all these. In fact they don't have reunion dinner but they have reunion lunch.

Having steamed chicken, vegetable and soup is considered as a luxury. And if there is extra money, one of her Uncles would buy some roast pork.

But no matter what, her granny would always ensured that they have fragrant rice during Chinese New Year. It got something to do with having fragrant rice symbolising wealth or something like that. In the old days, having fragrant rice for them is considered as very good as not many can afford fragrant rice.

According to Mamarazzi, Popo also uses fragrant rice. She use jasmine fragrant rice as the quality is very good. See...no husk attached and all grains are unbroken. Unbroken grain is good. Means perfect. ...perfect life perfect year?.

Mamarazzi said the scent of Jasmine fragrant rice brings back memories of the good old days. Mamarazzi ate very little when she was a kid. Her granny would fill her plate of rice with at least two scoop of rice. It's rude to put one scoop of rice as usually one scoop of rice is for the spirit. Not for human.

What Mamarazzi like the most then was to eat the burnt rice at the bottom of the pot. Another aunt also loves to eat the burnt rice. Yeah...in the old days they don't have electric rice cooker. Her granny cooks it in a stove.

Her granny used to chide her for not finishing her rice. Said she will get a pockmarked face husband. Must not hold chopstick at the very end else end up going far away from the family.

Wah...this Jasmine fragrant rice sure brought back a lot of memories to Mamarazzi leh. Let me smell pulak and see if I remembers anything from my "baby days".

Ah...I know.... the scent tells me my tummy is rumbling. Quit snapping photos and reminiscing old time la. I wanna eat my jasmine fragrant rice already.Jasmine fragrant rice is best eaten while it is still warm  .

  3. Yes it is wonderful rice, and heavenly WARM
How clever of you to LISTEN to

reminiscences of older people: listen for them, listen TO them, when they come.
You will learn much and extend your own "memory" back to earlier ways of life.

  4. Uikks, I also wana ask, how come cut the hole at the bottom of the bag instead of the top? But I guess easier to fill the rice pot if cut from the bottom kot.. But we always cut from the top, it's not that heavy to "tuang" into the rice pot as you can still let the bottom of the bag "rest" on the floor, while you just tilt the upper part and side of the bag to fill up the rice pot..

Ahhh, about the 1 scoop of rice, my (lady) immediate superior also very particular about this.. She is a small eater, and she eats very little rice.. So when we eat out (kiu soong), when the rice comes, she will scoop 2 scoops of rice for anyone who wants extra rice.. Most colleagues will just say 1 scoop is enuff (they paiseh ma), then this lady will scream and said Kennnoottt !!!! Must have 2 scoops one.. Ooohh, NOW I know, keke..

Ohh yes, I grow up with my parents telling me must finish all my rice on the plate too.. Two reasons:
    1) Don't waste, coz the farmers took 5 years to harvest rice (is that true?)
    2) If can't finish, then we will get a "polka-dot" face hubby next time, my parents call it "kam pei min" (mandarin orange skin face), kakakakaka..

  10. Wow, so did all of your family members manage to gain some weight? haha, i think all these (rice + dishes) are still okay, the scarier ones are those CNY cookies and tidbits, which they are really fattening

  16. good mah, mamarazzi was clever to cut the rice bag at the bottom.. like that means the rice will fall into the container from top (as if free from heaven) instead of having to pour them out from the bag if she cuts it at the top.. hehehehe, think carefully and it actually makes a different.. just like the theory why some people will paste the chinese word 福 upside down, meaning the happiness is given from heaven..

  17. wah, look at those dishes!! super duper yummy lah, got fish got crabs got prawns got chicken.. and of course need a nice bowl of piping hot jasmine fragrant rice to go with them.. and to make the perfect combination, the jasmine fragrant rice must be from SUNWHITE!! the grains from SUNWHITE are surely high quality and grade A-star, because there is no husk attached and all grains are unbroken..

wow!! last time only the rich can afford unbroken grains and all white rice in their bowls.. SUNWHITE surely can be the symbol of prosperity and bountifulness of the new year in the family huh?? :)

  18. oh, really?? must give more than one scoop of rice to your guests?? i didn't know that giving just one scoop of rice is offering to the ancestors leh.. so that means have to use smaller scoops lah, if use those big big scoop to scoop the rice, then how to have more than one scoop?? hahaha..

and i remember there's an advertisement (but can't remember if it's from SUNWHITE) during CNY.. the mom will always give two little scoop of rice to the son, so that the son will keep on requesting and she can add more rice for him.. and the reason behind is that, by having more rounds of added rice, she can spend more time with her son during the dinner.. it's a nice advertisement, i love that..
