Yesterday, Mamarazzi went thru Facebook and saw this photo. That's a very very very old photo of Mamarazzi's class. Can you tell who will be Dragon and who will remain as worm?
Mamarazzi remember that there was a boy in her class that got number 1 during 1st term exam, number 2 during 2nd term exam and 3rd term exam he got number 3. Not that bad, right? But he cried. Maybe scared of being punished by the parents.
Why do parents like to pressure their kid to be number 1 in everything? Will it guarantee a good life for the kids?Did the parents themselves get number 1 in everything when they are kids?
Out of curiosity, Mamarazzi used search engine to search for some of the top students during her time. Can find some, can't find some. Those that she found are involved in various kind of work...professional, business owner and salary workers.
Then Mamarazzi did another search. That's for those notorious kids which always got hounded to the Headmaster/Principal's Office. Are they robbers and murderer now?
Well, they are doing not bad too. Also business owners. Also some are professional in various decent lines of works. And one person which "visited" the Principal Office so much and it like a second home to that person, had even turn out to be the Chairperson of a large group of companies. That person even won a prestigious awards which was presented by the Prime Minister. The hand that used to be kissed by the "rotan panjang" is also the hand that "raba" the hand of Prime Minister.
This just shows that you don't have to be number 1 in school to be a successful human being.
I do hope Mamarazzi will remember this post when I start school and not to get caught in the mad rush of pressuring me to be number 1 in everything. Let me have time to be a "kid".

ReplyDeleteA smile from SJ =)
aww! well yeah, when we're naughty when we are young doesn't mean that we will turn out to be bad boys and girls. :D i was fairly naughty when i was young too, then when i went to secondary school i started to be a good boy, lulz.
ReplyDeleteparents shouldnt pressure the kids, really :D stress is never a good education tool!
SJ : The good old days..playing in the longkang catching tadpoles, kena denda lari padang, the 50sen canteen kari mee...
ReplyDeleteConan Cat: I get "stress" sometimes coz everywhere I go or when I switch on TV there are programmes and advertisement that brain wash and kept pushing and pushing saying kids eat this or do that will become smart, be champion and get num 1 in this and that. Being an average kid is so bad meh? As long as healthy.
I don't believe grades are the most important things in life. There are way better things to chase after :) This post has really vocalized what I've been thinking about these days :)Joshua will excel in life with your wisdom and fine judgment :D
ReplyDeleteWhen my kids tried their best, I'm already happy. Although now, they still play-play, they're still kids la... I had my childhood, they deserve theirs too :-).
ReplyDeleteI grew up with a friend, who lamented that she's the black sheep of the family (not as good results as her elder siblings). Well, she's doing very well now... I believe as long as a person finds a shoe that fits, is passionate, happy in what he's doing, he'll be fine...
Joanna : Must agree with you about that. As long as know ABC 123 and can think and cari makan enough lo
ReplyDeleteBoey Joey : very true. Like the notorious person that I've mentioned in the post. Found the work that the person like and now seems to be prospering.
ReplyDeleteI remember my old school pictures! It wasn't somehting I would want to look at again :P. Only time I look good in it was when I was in Form 5 hahaha!
ReplyDeleteworm dragon? I won't know... not even my own classmates :P.
I also agree with what you say. This brings to mind also about how nowadays you often see advertisements showing how good this and that kindergarten is, what-what-what method of teaching they are using and tends to make parents feel pressured to give the best of everything to their child so that hopefully their child can come out as the smartest, most intelligent kid in the nursery and things like that. And we as parents naturally would like to see our child emerge as the cream, so feel pressured to provide what other well-to-do parents could provide. I think we should stop snd think: did all those people who made it to the top of their whatever professional career went thru all those special methods as practised by those kindergartens/nurseries/playschools? Did their mothers of the olden days do any conscious teaching right from the womb itself? I think we should stop and think and not to get too caught up with imposing young children to acheive academic excellence/perfection. Just let them enjoy their babyhood or toddlerhood or childhood. Just let them enjoy their baby talk while time still permits because this is only once in a lifetime.
ReplyDeleteLV : I don't think anybody looks good in school photos ..me too doesnt look good :p
ReplyDeleteAlice : easy to say but then scare later sure want to compete..hope i can withstand the temptation
