So fast time flies. This is the 3rd week of school.
Mamarazzi and me had finally got into the rhythm of things.
Daily woke up 7am . Go for my daycare cum tuition. Noon, school bus lady will come and fetch me and I can sneak a nap in the bus. Came home around 7pm. Took a shower. Have dinner and relax a bit before starting my homework at 8pm. If i managed to finish my homework by 9pm, i get some Me Time which i usually spend playing tablet or sometimes, Lego.
Happy coz this year I still get to join church Funland activities AND school activities on Saturday.
Papa said pakai hentam enroll la if i wanna join school activities like martial art this and that. Let me run here and there till tired.
This year Mamarazzi not making Chinese Arrowhead Chip.
Gosh...so pricey leh. Between rm6 to rm10 per kg. Buy ready made ones would be better.
Thought wanna make pineapple tarts but lazy.
End up making Nian Gao (errr..sticky steam cake?". Asked neighbour for "donation " of some banana leaves.
Making Nian Gao is easy but the wrapping part needs a lot of "kungfu "(and a lot of banana leaves!).
Yesterday made 3. One leaked badly. Fed to Mr Bin. The other two leaked too but able to salvage. The top one in the picture is one leaking nian gao from yesterday.
Made another 3 today. Two did not leak. It's still in the mug as at the time of posting this blog coz Mamarazzi don't want to ruin the shapes. The 1 at the bottom picture leaked a bit but not as badly as yesterday.
Not bad la. Maybe if Mamarazzi can find some more banana leaves she will make some more. I can curi one and give to my class teacher so that she will be like the Kitchen God...after eating the sweet cake, she will report only good things to Mamarazzi. Who support my idea? If yes..."donate " some banana leaves to Mamarazzi ya.

Ha ha...I support you but I do not have banana leaves to donate la...I love nian gao but lazy to learn how to make them.
ReplyDeleteThe "batter" is very easy. But the "layering" of the banana skin so that it won't leak had Mamarazzi stumped. Trying to make a perfect one
DeleteSo far, i have not see any arrowhead here yet...
ReplyDeleteOver here same too. Not much . And even if have, all are small ones
DeleteIf your mama not lazy, making pineapple tarts, your mama know what to do ya, wink wink hint hint, lol...
ReplyDeleteLol....a lot of work leh.....
DeleteYour mama is so clever, making nian gao...
ReplyDeleteNot clever . Still learning.
DeleteThanknyou very much for the card and goodies
Small items only
DeleteIs that soup in the banana leaves. Looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteOh it is not a soup. It's actually a sticky sweet"cake". Usually during Chinese New Year people make for prayers and to eat. As it is sweet, it is considered as an auspicious food item.
DeleteWhen it is soft, its taste great eated with grated coconut.
When it harden, we fry it with sweet potatoes and yam.
Ngaku used to be so cheap leh. I think they know that it is so popular, everybody snapping up so they take opportunity to naik harga. Myself cuba one time make the chips and give up liao.
ReplyDeleteDont think so coz see in hypermarket not much being sold. Previous years there are abundance of ngaku. Not sure what happened this year the cheapest was rm3.88 and size very small. After peel skin nothing to fry langsung
DeleteI enjoy reading your posts about school and other things during your day. Your Nian Gao looks really interesting. I will look that up. I like to make and try new things from other countries.
ReplyDeleteDenise, thanks.
DeleteHere is the easy to follow recipe http://nasilemaklover.blogspot.my/2010/02/nian-gao-chinese-steamed-new-year.html?m=1. Mamarazzi used pressure cooker. Took 2hours only to make this. You dont have to use banana leaves if you can find them. Just pour the batter into baking pan and steam.
While its fresh, it will be soft and sticky. Nice to eat with grated coconut.
If wait about a week, it will harden. Cut into spices and fry with batter. Nice too
wah, baru started the new school-year, and this Small Kucing can't wait to count down the days ah?? so it's 190 minus how many now?? how many schooldays left for the year?? hehe.. everyday woke up at 7am and then reach home at 7pm, fuyoh, long day leh~~ @.@"

Longer than adult working hours of 8 hours a day hor...no choice since both mamarazzi and papa also banana. Had to get help from tuition teachers lo
aiyoh this year Mamarazzi is not frying arrowhead chips pulak, so the kitchen won't be greasy and Mamarazzi also won't come out with greasy hair and face already, haha!! steam "nian gao" a lot more senang right, at least don't have to jaga the fire all the time..
ReplyDeleteLol...steam nian gao still have to jaga fire la but no need stand there lo. The ngaku so expensive this yr. Duno y
DeleteI wonder tabao hv cheap ngaku or not? Lol
Deletehehe Small Kucing's neighbour so many banana leaves to donate to Mamarazzi ke?? aiyoh Mamarazzi keeps on trying, later the whole banana tree also gone botak leh, haha!! but Small Kucing very smart, he knows must give "nian gao" to his teachers so that their mouths are stuck and can only give good report, hahahaha!! must be Uncle TMA who taught him.. :p
ReplyDeleteNeighbour banana tree still very young. Not many leaves. Gitta source from elsewhere.
Delete... tell me what the "steam cake' is made off, lil kitten ... hope it's something salty and spicy cuz I do not like sweet ... Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteAlamak...it's sweet .. :(
DeleteIt's made of glutinous rice flour + sugar + water.
Chinese eat this during Chinese New Year as sweet food is considered auspicious food. Like it bring sweetness to that
year.
Also uses it as an offering to God especially the Kitchen God. The story is that every year end(before ChineseNew Year) , the Kitchen God will go up to Heaven and report the family behaviour to the Jade Emperor. If the report is good, the Jade Emperor will bless the family with goodvthings. But if report is bad.....
Hence family will make this sweet cake to "give " to the Kitchen God. The "kind" version is that after eating the sweet cake, the kitchen god will report only good stuffs. The "naughty" version is ..rhat after eating the sticky cake, the kitchen god mouth will stick together can cant gv bad report. Lol
So fast third week already??!!! Phew, how time flies! Woke up at 7am and reach back home at 7pm, pity you Small Kucing.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're enjoying school.
Have a fabulous day. ☺
ThanksSandee☺
DeleteCheat lah, use plastic containers and lapik with banana leaves, then no need so many leaves also won't leak XD ...
ReplyDeleteHave to steam leh. Plastic containers cannot tahan heat. Otherwise become poisonous leh..
DeleteAiyor!!! No way we should use the plastic to steam lah. What a lazy man's nian gao! Muahahaha
DeleteHuh? I never thought about this. But... I saw got some nian gao sold in plastic containers leh. How were those made? @.@
DeleteI suspect the company cook the nian gao in bulk and then pour into the plastic mould.
DeleteSaw in pasar got sell those in plastic wrapper. Not sure how they make those.
Nian gao have to steam 1 hour in high heat and 6-8hours in low heat. If use plastic, must use those that ngum for long steaming . Even that, it's not sure whether there are chemical or not.
Anyway, Mamarazzi use short cut. Pressure cooker for 2-3 hrs. Done. Kihkihkih
Mama did a good job there! I think this is more work involved but the outcome can be so satisfying. After seeing your facebook post, I bought one small one
ReplyDeleteThanks Elaine. Quite easy to make. Only need to know how to wrap it. Anyway, Mamarazzi used pressure cooker. No need jaga api for 10 hours like the old days
DeleteYour Mama sent to Sibu last year, but not Singapore, sobssss
ReplyDeleteCoz waiting for SG to come mah. SG say coming but always end up in Kluang
DeleteWah I love nian gao! They are so sweet and simply yummy!
ReplyDeleteDo try make. It's easy.
DeleteYummy! Yummy! I will get my grated coconut ready! This year must eat kao-kao.
ReplyDeleteThis is the only CNY food besides Yee Sang that gives me the festive feeling.
Hahaha ya...yee sang. That sure gives festive mood

About the dripping neen koe, why cannot eat after that? Can eat with grated coconut ma.. cannot ah? Mr Bin must be very full then... hey, no need to send over to me, just kidding.. supply to those who donate banana leaves first.. hahahaa...
ReplyDeleteLol..hard to find banana leave wor.
DeleteMamarazzi not really crazy abt nian gao. But saja make for hei fun. Moreover last year nian gao project not successful. Th8s year aim is to make a leak free nian gao
Me apa pun tarak bake or cook. So lazy and partly ingredients price have gone up, might as well just buy a bit here and there.
ReplyDeleteTrue. All so expensive liao. Seems no longer viable to make as tarak eat much also.
DeleteNow banana LEAVES, I have plenty! The banana itself dunno what kind of species - full of huge seeds only.
ReplyDeleteI'm just looking through cookie recipes hehe. (Yaya office time, supposed to be working)
Persistent ..haha. I have no banana tree. If I had, I will donate some. ^.^
ReplyDeleteWah I've never thought of making my own nian gao before.. too lazy to even cook one hahaha.. but I will try to do so this year and my one of our fave snacks - fried niangao with egg :P
ReplyDeleteAi @ Sakura Haruka
Never know the hardest part of nian gao making is the leaf wrapping part, I thought is the time consuming steaming process :P
ReplyDeleteYummy!i like it best when fried with egg with some salt added.
ReplyDeleteI support you, my parents's house got lots of banana tree. Come to Kuching la small kucing, we have lots of big kucing too here ;)
